Interesting. I just discovered Python's uuid.getnode() method, which appears to be based on the MAC address. Does exactly what I want. :-)

If I want a per-system UUID for Linux and UNIX-like systems, can I rely on hostid or should I be using something else, like the NIC MAC?

Apparently a bunch of good ways to filter for unread messages in Thunderbird. Best solution: I customized the toolbar to add a view filter.
